The Post-Breakup Rebound (You're the Band-Aid)
She's fresh out of a relationship and filling a vacancy — the intensity isn't about you, it's about the void.
If she's recently out of a relationship and comparing you to the ex (even favorably), pump the brakes hard. If she's still actively processing, walk — the math is against you, and you'll be the next chapter she complains about.
What It Looks Like
- She’s recently out of a relationship (less than 2-3 months)
- She talks about the ex — sometimes angrily, sometimes wistfully
- The intensity is high, the pace is fast, the emotions are big
- You feel like you’re being fast-tracked into the role of “new boyfriend”
- You’re being compared to the ex, even positively (“you’re so much more [X] than him”)
What’s Happening
You’re the rebound. She’s not processing the breakup — she’s replacing it. You’re filling a vacancy, not building something new. The intensity isn’t about you — it’s about the emotional vacuum she’s trying to fill.
What This Means
Rebound relationships have a very low survival rate. When the grief catches up with her (and it will), she may realize she’s not actually ready, or that you were a placeholder. Even if she stays, the relationship was built on the foundation of her previous one — not on who you two are together independently.
Navigation
- Ask: “When did your last relationship end?” If it’s recent, proceed with extreme caution.
- If she compares you to the ex (even favorably) — red flag. You’re being measured against a ghost.
- If she wants to move fast — pump the brakes. “I like you and I want this to develop at a healthy pace. I think we should let things breathe.”
- If she’s still processing the breakup actively (anger, grief, obsessive talk) — she’s not available. Walk and say: “I think you need time to heal. If you’re in a different place down the line, reach out.”
- If it’s been 3+ months since her breakup and the ex barely comes up — probably fine.
Discrimination
Rebound vs. instant relationship? The instant relationship is about pace — she skips the courtship phase and goes straight to couple mode. The rebound is about motivation — she’s with you to avoid processing her breakup. The instant-relationship person might just be enthusiastic. The rebound is using you as an emotional Band-Aid. They often co-occur but have different drivers.
