The Ex Obsession

Her ex keeps coming up unprompted — you're competing with a ghost that has home-field advantage.

Bottom Line

Note how often the ex comes up. Once or twice as context is fine; a recurring theme means she's not ready. Don't try to win against a ghost — if she's still processing, say so and step back. Walk if she can't let go.

What It Looks Like

  • She brings up her ex unprompted, repeatedly
  • The ex is either a villain (“he was a narcissist”) or still present (“we’re still friends, he calls me for advice”)
  • She compares you to him, positively or negatively
  • You feel like there are three people in the relationship

What’s Happening

She’s not over her ex. The emotional bandwidth that should be available for a new relationship is still occupied by the old one. Whether she’s angry, sad, or still entangled — she’s not fully available to you.

What This Means

Do not date someone who isn’t over their ex. It doesn’t matter how great she is otherwise. You’re competing with a ghost that has home-field advantage. The ex doesn’t have to be in the picture to be in the way — he just has to be in her head.

  • Note how often the ex comes up
  • Once or twice as relevant context — fine
  • Recurring theme — she’s not ready
  • Say: “It sounds like you’re still processing that relationship. Take the time you need, and maybe we reconnect down the line.”
  • Do not try to “win” against the ex. You can’t.

Discrimination

Ex obsession vs. normal processing? Everyone has past relationships, and mentioning an ex once or twice as context is normal. The obsession is when the ex is a recurring theme — she brings him up unprompted, compares you to him, or references him in ways that have nothing to do with the conversation. Frequency and unprompted-ness are the tells.
