The Double-Binder

You Can't Win — whatever you do is wrong, and so is the opposite. The goalposts keep moving.

Bottom Line

The game is rigged. You cannot satisfy someone whose standard is "whatever you did, the opposite would have been better." State your position: "It feels like I can't get this right no matter what I do." If she can hear that and adjust, there's potential. If she doubles down — walk.

What It Looks Like

  • Whatever you do is wrong, and so is the opposite
  • You text too much? You’re needy. Text less? You’re distant.
  • You plan dates? You’re controlling. You let her plan? You’re passive.
  • You’re emotionally open? You’re weak. You’re reserved? You’re cold.
  • Every effort you make is met with a moving target
  • You feel like you’re solving a puzzle where the solution keeps changing

What’s Happening

This is a double-bind — a no-win scenario where both options are framed as wrong. It’s either a deliberate control tactic (keeping you destabilized and striving) or a reflection of her own internal conflict (she doesn’t know what she wants, so everything feels wrong). The effect is the same: you’re constantly failing a test you can’t pass.

What This Means

The game is rigged. You cannot satisfy someone whose standard is “whatever you did, the opposite would have been better.”

  • Recognize the double-bind pattern. Are the goalposts moving?
  • Stop trying to win. State your position: “It feels like I can’t get this right no matter what I do. I’m doing my best here.”
  • If she can hear that and adjust — there’s potential. She may not have realized what she was doing.
  • If she doubles down, blames you, or adds a third contradictory expectation — walk. This doesn’t improve. It’s a personality pattern, not a misunderstanding.
  • The double-bind is often a sign of borderline traits or high-conflict personality. Proceed accordingly.

Discrimination

Double-bind or just high standards? High standards are consistent — the bar is high but it stays in one place. The double-bind is when the bar moves depending on what you just did. If the standard is “be more emotionally available,” that’s a request. If it was “be less needy” last week and “be more open” this week — that’s the bind.
