The Emotional Rollercoaster (Highs Are Amazing, Lows Are Brutal)

When it's good it's incredible, when it's bad it's devastating — and you keep saying 'but when it's good...'

Bottom Line

If you're staying for the highs hoping they'll become the norm, you're already in trouble. The highs are the exception created by the lows. Walk — this pattern is addictive and destructive.

What It Looks Like

  • When it’s good, it’s incredible — best connection, best sex, best conversations of your life
  • When it’s bad, it’s devastating — fights, withdrawals, accusations, door-slamming
  • The relationship burns very hot and very cold
  • You’re either on top of the world or in the pit — there’s no middle ground
  • Friends express concern about the intensity
  • You find yourself saying “but when it’s good, it’s SO good”

What’s Happening

This is a high-conflict, high-intensity relationship. The highs feel amazing precisely because the lows are so low — it’s the contrast that creates the perceived intensity. This is often a trauma bond: two people with complementary wounds creating a cycle of intensity and repair.

What This Means

You’re confusing intensity with depth. The relationship isn’t deep — it’s volatile. Deep relationships feel stable most of the time, with occasional dips. Volatile relationships feel incredible half the time and unbearable the other half.

  • Track the ratio: what percentage of the time do you feel good vs. bad?
  • If it’s less than 80% good in the first two months — it won’t get better. The early phase is supposed to be the easiest.
  • Ask yourself honestly: “Am I staying for the highs, hoping they’ll become the norm?” The highs are not the norm. They’re the exception created by the lows.
  • Walk. This pattern is one of the most addictive and one of the most destructive. The longer you stay, the harder it is to leave, and the more damage you absorb.
  • The “but when it’s good” line is the universal justification of people in abusive or toxic relationships. If you hear yourself saying it, you’re already in trouble.

Discrimination

Emotional rollercoaster vs. hot-cold cycle? The hot-cold cycle is about unpredictable engagement — she’s interested, then distant, then interested. The emotional rollercoaster is about extreme emotional states — incredible highs and devastating lows. The rollercoaster is more intense and more damaging. The hot-cold cycle might just be instability. The rollercoaster is volatility.
