The Situationship Drift ("Not Ready for a Relationship")
You're functionally dating without the label — she's getting girlfriend benefits without girlfriend commitment.
At the 6-8 week mark, state your position clearly. If she still says she's not ready, believe her and leave. Don't stay hoping she'll change her mind — she won't, or if she does, the foundation is already unstable.
What It Looks Like
- She’s affectionate, warm, and present — but won’t commit
- You’re functionally dating but without the label
- She says she’s “figuring things out” or “not in a place for something serious”
- But she keeps seeing you, sleeping with you, acting like a girlfriend
- It’s been 2+ months and nothing has progressed
What’s Happening
She’s getting relationship benefits without relationship commitment. She may genuinely like you but be incapable of commitment, or she may like your presence while keeping options open. The distinction doesn’t matter — the outcome is the same.
What This Means
“I’m not ready for a relationship” almost always has an invisible “…with you” at the end. When the right person shows up, people who “aren’t ready” suddenly become ready. You’re not the right person for her, or she’s not capable with anyone. Not your problem.
Navigation
- At the 6-8 week mark, state your position: “I’m looking for something real. I like you and I’d want that with you. If you don’t want the same, I need to move on.”
- If she still says she’s not ready — believe her and leave
- Do not stay hoping she’ll change her mind. She won’t, or if she does, the foundation is already unstable
- The most powerful thing you can do here is walk away. It’s the only thing that might make her reconsider — and by the time she does, you may not want her anymore.
Discrimination
Situationship drift vs. slow pacing? Some people genuinely need more time before committing. The difference: someone who’s slow but interested will tell you where they are (“I really like you, I just need a couple more weeks”) and show consistent effort. The drifter gives you all the benefits and none of the clarity — she’s not moving toward commitment, she’s avoiding it.
