Bids for Connection

This is the most actionable concept from relationship research for months 1-3. It comes from John Gottman’s work, and it turns “is this going well?” from a vibe into something you can actually observe.

What’s a Bid?

A bid is a small attempt to connect. In early dating, they look like:

  • She shares something she’s interested in and looks to see if you care
  • She sends you a meme or a funny video
  • She touches your arm
  • She asks about your day
  • She shares something vulnerable
  • She suggests doing something together

None of these are grand gestures. That’s the point. Connection isn’t built from grand gestures — it’s built from hundreds of small moments where one person reaches out and the other person either responds or doesn’t.

The Three Responses

Turning toward (healthy): You notice, you respond, you engage. “That’s hilarious.” “Tell me more.” “I’d love to do that.” The bid lands.

Turning away (unhealthy): You’re distracted or dismissive. You’re on your phone. You give a one-word response. You change the subject. The bid dies.

Turning against (destructive): You respond with irritation or mockery. “Why do you send me this stuff?” The bid dies, and she learns not to make them.

The Research

Gottman found that couples who stay together turn toward bids about 86% of the time. Couples who divorce turn toward about 33% of the time. The gap is enormous, and it’s not about the big conversations — it’s about the small, daily, easy-to-miss stuff.

Why This Matters in Early Dating

Compatibility isn’t just chemistry. It’s whether you both reliably turn toward each other’s small invitations for connection. This is observable from week one:

  • Does she respond when you share something, or does it disappear into the void?
  • Does she send you things — memes, songs, thoughts — or does contact only happen around logistics?
  • When you tell her about your day, does she ask a follow-up question or just say “nice”?

A woman who never makes bids and never turns toward yours is telling you something. It might be disinterest, it might be an avoidant style, it might be that she’s a passive communicator. Any of those is information you want early.

How To Use This

Make bids yourself. Share things with her. Send the funny video. Invite her into your life. Then watch what happens. Your bids are probes — her response pattern over a few weeks is real data.

Turn toward hers. Not performatively — genuinely. If she shares something she cares about and you can’t muster actual interest, that’s also information (about the match, not about her).

Notice your own failures. If you’re chronically turning away because you’re distracted, guarded, or playing it cool, you’re killing the thing you’re trying to build.

Don’t over-index on one dead bid. People have off days. The signal is the pattern: over a month, are bids being made, and are they landing?

The couples that work aren’t the ones with the best first date. They’re the ones where two people keep reaching for each other in small ways, and keep getting caught.
